Tim Stewart of Rockin’ S Farms likes growing pumpkins: Jack o’ Lantern pumpkins both big and little, peanut pumpkins (the variety called ‘Galeux d’Eysine’ with its distinctive peanut-like growths all over the skin), Cinderella pumpkins (‘Rouge... Pumpkins are good keepers so you don’t have to deal with them right away. Enjoy them for their decorative qualities but then be sure to enjoy them for their eating qualities as well. Keep them on a porch, out of direct sun and you can keep them for a long, long time. In the bowl of a stand mixer, combine flour, butter and 2 teaspoons salt. Once everything is very cold, move the bowl to the stand mixer and fit the mixer with the flat paddle.

MARTINSVILLE – Don’t hesitate to tackle baking bread, encouraged baker Darla Main-Schneider, because making it is not as hard as people think. Main-Schneider has run Rising Sun Breads for eight years. She recently gave a program on bread-baking recently at the Martinsville Library. “Bread is a very simple product, very basic,” she said. “It doesn’t matter what kind” of flour is used, she said, adding that, however, she prefers Lindley Mills’ organic flour from North Carolina and King Arthur. She uses sea salt instead of iodized salt, which she called “too fine. The only tools needed, apart from a mixing bowl and baking pan, are a cutting tool and scale, to cut and weigh equal-sized pieces of dough if you want to make rolls, she said.

Because traditions adapt with time, our cookies reflect this evolution as we tweak flavorings, add ingredients and merge customs. If anything, this makes our baking even more important. These handmade gifts are crucial and comforting,...

FRONT BURNER: Garlic Knots a tasty way to warm kitchen

On cold days I like to bake. So it's an understatement to say I've been baking a lot this winter. I've even found excuses to cook things in the oven that normally do just fine on the stove-top or microwave.Any excuse to turn on the oven and knock the chill off the kitchen is fine by me.My kitchen, for some reason -- it could be the drafty, 100-year-old windows on two sides, the weatherstripping-less door my dogs demand I open and close seemingly nonstop or my penny-pinching thermostat setting...
