The first thing I noticed about Sam was the crisply rolled sleeve of his button-down shirt. Sleeves like that don’t belong in rock clubs, in Boston, on steamy spring nights, and the arms inside of them certainly don’t belong around me. That’s more or less what I thought as we shook hands like fresh colleagues, the threads of my vintage... We don’t belong together, I decided, despite the popcorn machine in my belly. A framed copy of a feature I wrote about the first time I went camping with Sam. He loves sleeping in the woods. The first time I saw a gallery wall I was in Brooklyn, visiting a friend’s grandmother. Her kitchen and living room walls were covered in dozens of family photographs encased in thin black frames, less than an inch of space between them.
