Can the Close Comfort PC9+plus Portable Air Conditioner save you during the Aussie summer?

IF YOU are someone who thinks summer is the most wonderful time of year, I want nothing to do with you and your flawed ideas.

The Australian summer is no joke and I fail to see what people find so rewarding about the putrid humidity making you sweat from simple tasks like adjusting the date on your watch.

And that’s not even to mention those sleepless nights spent uncomfortably hiding from the mozzies under your bed sheet while your pedestal fan blows hot air around your room.

For those who dislike the warmer months as much as I, you will be happy to know that there are a now plethora of affordable portable air conditioning units now available for purchase.

One such product claiming to be built using “revolutionary patented Australian technology” recently grabbed my attention.

The $A649 CloseComfort PC9+plus Personal Air Conditioner claims to be able to create a cool microclimate, while also offering a 75 per cent saving of air conditioning electricity consumption — sounds pretty great to me.

Unlike other products, the PC9+plus requires no pipes, installation or consumables because the unit exhausts a gentle stream of warm air up to the ceiling where the heat dissipates.

The idea is using the product to create a cool microclimate, which means the unit avoids wasting energy cooling unoccupied areas of the room only cooling your direct zone.

Using the product is as simple as turning it on, raising the cold air and then warm air cover, and then waiting for the cooling to begin.

The company suggests the user should place the air conditioner no more than 1.5m away from themselves to get the optimal benefit.

So how does the product actually stack up to these claims?

I am going to be honest here and say overall I am a little disappointed with the product given the $649 pricing.

The lack of energy consumption is impressive don’t get me wrong — one household kettle uses as much electricity as six of the company’s air conditioners — but as the product doesn’t attempt to cool the entire room, it can only really be used for one or two people.

Not only that, but the PC9+plus claims the gentle stream of warm air up exhausted to the ceiling doesn’t perceptibly warm the room. While this is true for those directly in front of the unit, this wasn’t what I found when using the product on a larger scale.

When I had a lounge room full of people, with the unit working, majority of people claimed it was actually hotter than without the PC9+plus operating.

Even when using it in my bedroom I found my bed to be cool, but when I woke up in the morning the rest of my room was disgusting.

Another issue I had was actually getting the unit to work, with the product showing me the green power light but not actually working on multiple occasions.

Negatives aside, when the product did work and I was sitting directly in front of the stream, it was pretty great on a hot day.

But is that experience and the low operating cost enough to outweigh the negatives of the product? Sadly not for this guy.

If you are looking for a portable air conditioner, I would probably be looking elsewhere or waiting for this to come on a very, very good sale.
