Ten minutes later, I see a dozen or so women slowly make their way to lawn, stopping every few feet to readjust their floral head crowns or puff on a joint. I am at Ganja Goddess Getaway , a women-only weed camp. Here, women of all ages, backgrounds, and many income levels come together for a weekend of camping, yoga, and many, many special brownies. Nestled a half hour away from Palm Springs, women come to unwind and make new friends, but also to celebrate a habit often shunned in their own communities. I was curious to experience a new kind of wellness goal: one taking a former legally defined narcotic and using it to build a diverse community.

Cotton candy, in all of its colorful, puffy glory, is one of those timeless treats capable of evoking childhood with one disintegrating bite. In fluffy pink bushels, it pervades fairgrounds and festivals. Held high above cheering crowds, it bobbles its way between rows at sporting events. In the presence of snarling circus lions, its airy, delicate fibers are stuffed, soothingly, into the mouths of terrified toddlers. [embedded content]Cotton candy machines may hold the key for making life-sized artificial livers, kidneys, bones and other essential organs. For several years, Leon Bellan, assistant professor of mechanical engineering at Vanderbilt University, has been tinkering with cotton candy machines, getting them to spin out networks of tiny threads comparable in size, density and complexity to the patterns formed by capillaries – the tiny, thin-walled vessels that deliver oxygen and nutrients to...
Across from the Corn Palace, there is a sweet portal to the past customers are eating up. Jesse's Candy Clouds is a cotton candy store, which opened in Mitchell a little more than a month ago. Tourists line up every day to get their hands on the sugary confection. The owners say there is a good reason why people have an appetite for their business. Fluff is a cotton candy maker's forte. No nutrition to fill up on, but that is ok. After all,...
The idea to use a cotton candy machine (or candy floss as the Europeans call the sugar based sweet synonymous with fairgrounds) was the brainwave of Professor Leon Bellan, who is a mechanical engineer by background. Bellan works at the Vanderbilt University, located in Nashville, Tennessee. Bellan was researching the mechanism by which nanoscale fibers are formed by the process of electrospinning. For this to work, a high voltage is supplied to a fiber-forming jet. This leads to deposits of...
