Serious drinkers, read on: The “internet of things” has already graced us with the latest Sodastream that can download recipes for cocktails. Now Pernod Ricard has shown a dispenser that holds a half-dozen spirits of your choice, and it even monitors supplies so you need never run dry of Kahlua or Triple Sec. In development since 2014 and shown in functioning form at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas in January, the device looks like a desktop stand holding six books. Calling it a “cocktail library” is not a conceit too far, as Pernod Ricard initially dubbed this “Project Gutenberg,” conceived as “a pioneering, intelligent system which will transform the way we enjoy premium spirits and experience mixology at... ” Now called Opn, it is tailor-made for homes that already contain refrigerators which monitor the “best before” dates of one’s cheeses, or mowers that sense when the lawn needs a trim.
The tool is sort of like a booze version of the popular recipe app Supercook . You load the ingredients you have—vodka, bourbon, orange juice, whatever—and the tool will populate a list of cocktail recipes based on those ingredients. You can filter by hot drinks and classic drinks, and you can even save favorites. We’ve written about a similar tool but Make a Cocktail is available on the web, not just iOS, plus it gives you a little more info on each drink.
